What's Next?

Coming Up:

Bring your mother to see Your Mother! Your Mother Dances presents a Mother’s Day weekend of dance May 9-11 at Danceworks Studio Theatre in Milwaukee.  Friends, Lovers & Mothers dance new and original works and fundraise for YMD dancers and future projects including a full-length presentation of David Parker’s Nut/Cracked at UWM’s Mainstage Theatre in December 2008.  Join us on Mother’s Day for a special day: a tasty brunch buffet at the hip Red Dot and a fundraiser matinee performance with silent auction and goodies for moms and the folks they love.

Artistic Director Elizabeth Johnson will present a new work, Constructed Woman Up Above (Ode for a Dakini) featuring timely and provocative Marge Piercy poems, inverted singing and groovily demanding dancing from Johnson and Company: Kelly Anderson, Paula Biasi, Susie Carlson, Michelle DiMeo, Jaimi Patterson, Katie Sopoci, and Christal Wagner.  Kleenex boxes are the messy metaphor for expectations in a relationship in Johnson’s Take My Box matching her again with her artistic and life partner in crime, Luc Vanier.  The two will also dance Remind Me a collaborative collection of love snapshots to clever and cheerfully sentimental songs with lyrics penned by the singular and prolific female lyricist Dorothy Fields.

Guest artists Anna Sapozhnikov (Artistic Director, Moyamo Dance--Chicago) and Erika Randall (Artistic Director, Erika Randall and Dancers--Boulder, CO) present their collaborative duet Sweetie Pie, an autobiographical romp through mother-daughter relationships explored through peculiar gesture, fully charged physicality, and text about mothers and pies to examine the ever-so-common and always painful struggle to cut the apron strings.

Randall will also dance her quizzical solo, Self Defense to the philosophical styling of Eckhart Tolle and Sapozhnikov will perform Sara Hook's Valeska's Vitriol, a merrily confrontational and manic look at Valeska Gert, a bawdy satirist, actress, dancer and cabaret performer in Germany during the Weimar period.

For this show, Your Mother Dances is trying a unique performance schedule with evening shows on Friday and Saturday May 9 & 10 at 7:30 PM, a late matinee Saturday May 10 at 4:00 PM, and a special Mother’s Day Fundraiser Sunday, May 11 at 2:30 PM.  Tickets for May 9 & 10 are: $15 seniors/students, $20 general, $25 reserved seating. Tickets for the Mother’s Day Fundraiser are $45 with brunch and $35 without.

Brunch at the Red Dot (2498 N. Bartlett, Milwaukee, non-smoking event) will begin at noon on the Patio.  Patrons will check in with a Your Mother Dances representative the day of the fundraiser at the Red Dot to receive their brunch certificate and show ticket. The silent auction will be for events and services from hot local shops, restaurants, and body workers. Tickets for all shows including the fundraiser can be purchased at Danceworks: 1661 N. Water Street, Milwaukee, WI, on the web at: www.danceworks1661.org, or by calling the Danceworks Box Office at: (414) 277-8480.
